To customize minecraft premade builds, change the palette first, then add details, then protect the result. Do it in that order so you only fix each thing once.
Before you start
A build already imported. See importing builds with WorldEdit.
WorldEdit and, for protection, WorldGuard on your server.
A backup of the world. Do it now.
Change the palette
Select the build with the wand (//wand), or set corners with //pos1 and //pos2.
//replace stone_bricks mossy_stone_bricksswaps one block type inside the selection.//replace <from> <to>takes a mask first, then a pattern, so//replace oak_planks spruce_planksworks.//set <pattern>fills the whole selection. Use it for flat floors, not whole buildings.//undoreverts a swap that looks wrong.
Palette ideas: warm woods with dark stone for a tavern, pale stone with copper for a modern look, blackstone with deepslate for a ruin.
Add detail
Lighting: lanterns, torches or glow items in dark corners stop mobs spawning inside.
Signs: label shops, rooms and exits so players know where to go.
Entrances: a clear door or arch and a path to it. Players look for it first.
Furniture: add chairs, tables and lamps. See furniture and decorations.
Characters: NPC plugins add talkable characters, and hologram plugins add floating text above doors or shops.
Protect the build
Select the build with WorldEdit.
/rg define mybuildcreates a region named mybuild./rg addowner mybuild YourNameand/rg addmember mybuild PlayerNameset who can build./rg flag mybuild pvp denysets a flag./rg flag mybuild build allowlets everyone build./rg info mybuildshows what is set.
A new region blocks building for non-members. Changes save by themselves after a short delay. /rg save forces it.
Keep a backup of the finished build. Save it with
//copyand//schem save mybuild-finalso you can restore it if players or a mistake damage it.
Check it worked
Walk through as a normal player, not an operator.
Try to break a block. It should be denied unless you allowed it.
Look at it at night to check the lighting.
Common problems
Replace changed too much
The block type was used elsewhere in your selection. Undo and select a smaller area.
Players can still build
They are an owner or member, or a build flag is set to allow. Check /rg info.
The wand does not select
You may lack the permission, or the item differs on your server. Use //pos1 and //pos2.
